How to Watch YouTube in Hindi — Free Translation

India watches more YouTube than any other country, and a large share of what is worth watching there is in English — while a large share of what the rest of the world might want is in Hindi. Translation runs in both directions here, and each direction has its own problem.

English video into Hindi

The free route first:

1. Open the video, click the settings gear.
2. Subtitles/CC — an empty list means no caption track and nothing will work.
3. Auto-translate, then हिन्दी.

For spoken Hindi rather than Devanagari on screen, a browser extension adds a Hindi voice over the original. Hindi is well supported in neural speech synthesis, so the voice quality is genuinely good — better than the translation feeding it, usually.

Hindi video into English

The same mechanism in reverse, and it works: Hindi is one of the source languages YouTube can auto-dub from, and Hindi captions are widely generated. Set the target to English rather than Hindi and everything else is identical.

This is the direction people ask about most on YouTube's own help forums — a Hindi lecture, cooking channel or news segment that a non-Hindi speaker wants to follow.

The Hinglish problem

This is the thing that actually breaks translation for Indian content, and no tool handles it well.

Everyday Indian speech mixes Hindi and English constantly — a sentence starts in Hindi, the technical noun is English, the verb returns to Hindi. Speech recognition has to decide which language it is hearing, mid-sentence, repeatedly.

What goes wrong in practice:

• The recogniser locks onto one language and transcribes the other phonetically, producing nonsense words.
• English technical terms embedded in Hindi speech get transliterated into Devanagari and then translated back into something unrelated.
• Sentences that were already half-English get "translated" into English twice, mangling word order.

There is no setting that fixes this. The practical workaround is that heavily code-switched content translates poorly regardless of tool, while content that stays in one language throughout translates well. Formal news, scripted educational channels and lectures do far better than casual vlogs.

Which method for what

Regional languages beyond Hindi

Worth knowing what is and is not covered. YouTube lists Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu among the languages its automatic dubbing can work from, alongside Hindi. Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Punjabi and others have far thinner support in both caption generation and translation quality — captions are often absent entirely, which ends the matter before translation is even attempted.

The pattern is consistent: the more speakers and the more published text a language has, the better every stage works.

When it does not work

No subtitles. The most common cause by a wide margin, and especially common on smaller Indian channels with imperfect audio.

The Devanagari looks wrong. Usually a font rendering issue in the browser rather than a translation error — conjunct consonants are the usual casualty.

The voice reads English words oddly. A Hindi voice pronouncing embedded English technical terms with Hindi phonology. Expected behaviour, not a fault.
